THE NINTH SIKH GURU -GURU TEGH BAHADUR’S SACRIFICE Guru Ji was kept secretly in a broken old house outside the city. The king feared rebellion if the news of Guru’s arrest was made public. Aurangzeb personally talked to the Guru, persuading Him to become a Muslim : “Now you are a Guru only to the Hindus. If you become a Muslim the entire Muslim community would consider you their Guru, all Hindus would convert to Islam and entire country would follow you as their Guru.” The emperor tried a lot of tricks to lure the Guru, but all the incentives fell on deaf ears. The emperor further urged, “I want to rid the country of all its communal tensions. If there is only one religion there would be none.” The Guru remarked, “You want to reduce it to one from two but my God has ordered to make it three.” After this there was no direct communication between the two. The emperor ordered his Qazis and other learned men of Islam to try and convince the Guru of superiority of Islam and to adopt it. All sorts of deceptions, pressure tactics and threats were tried, but none of them seemed to have any impact whatsoever. When talks seemed to fail, the emperor resorted to tortures. He was locked in a prison of iron and subjected to physical torture. When personal punishments failed, the emperor decided to torture His Sikhs. Bhai Mati Das, who had surrendered along with the Guru, was asked to adopt Islam. On his refusal, his body was cut into two halves with a sawing machine. Bhai Dayala was boiled to death in a huge vessel. The Guru was still unmoved and unafraid. The defeated emperor ordered His execution, and on Magghar Sudi 5, Sammat 1732 Bikrami, the orders were put into effect. He was taken to Chandni Chowk where He took a bath, and while He was reciting the Japji Sahib, the executioner’s sword detached His head from the body. He thus sacrificed His life to save another religion, the Hinduism. BRAVERY OF GURU TEGH BAHADUR’S SIKHS As the Guru was executed, a severe storm gripped the city of Delhi, and there was virtual darkness during the daytime. Guru’s body and head were being guarded by heavy security. However, dust filled everyone’s eyes and the storm blinded the guards temporarily. A Sikh, Bhai Lakhi Shah Vanjara, arranged about hundred carts loaded with cotton. In one of them he hid the Guru’s body, which he had been able to pick up, helped by the storm. The caravan of carts took the body to Rai Seena, at his residence. There he arranged for the funeral pyre inside his house, bowed to the body, and finally moving around it as per the customs, surrendered it to fire. He set the entire house on fire so that no one would suspect. People thought his house had caught fire and came to help with buckets of water, but he did not allow anyone to extinguish the flames. Thus he sacrificed his entire house to preserve the respect of Guru’s body. Two days after, when house had cooled down, he went in to pick up the ashes and started worshipping the place. Gurdwara ‘Rakab Ganj’ stands here today. At the place where the Guru was executed at Chandni Chowk, Gurdwara ‘Sees Ganj’ has been built. The Guru’s head was taken to safety by Bhai Jeuna Ji, who carried it all the way to Anandpur Sahib and handed it to Guru Gobind Singh, Who cremated it with due respect and honour.
